Multi-Spectral

What is Multi-Spectral

Multi-spectral imaging captures information across the electromagnetic spectrum, including visible light as well as near-infrared and other non-visible wavelengths. This technology enables the identification of materials, detecting differences that are not apparent in standard imaging techniques. This provides a more comprehensive view of the target area compared to standard RGB (red, green, blue) cameras which only capture the visible light spectrum. This expanded capability allows for applications in various fields such as environmental monitoring and mineral exploration.

The visible light spectrum ranges from approximately 400 to 700 nanometres and includes the colours we can see with the human eye. The wavelengths correspond to different colours, with blue light having the shortest wavelength and red light having the longest. Beyond the visible spectrum are the near-infrared and other non-visible wavelengths that can provide additional insights. These wavelengths can be particularly useful in identifying water stress in plants, detecting pests, and analysing soil nutrients.

Spectral indices are mathematical combinations of different wavelength bands that highlight specific features or properties of the target area. They can be derived from the reflectance values of various bands captured during the imaging process. These indices are commonly used in agriculture to assess factors like vegetation health, moisture levels, and soil composition. This allows for real-time monitoring of crop conditions and encourages more sustainable farming practices. By analyzing the spectral signatures, farmers and agronomists can make more informed decisions about crop management, irrigation, and other practices.

This data-driven approach contributes to increased yields and better resource management.
